Wild Card!

WILD CARD! will be the next piece of programming to be added to our repertoire. It will make its public debut in late September 2008 and will be yet another playwriting opportunity for MAP Kids who have participated in at least PLAYMAKING and PLAY-IT-AGAIN programs. After attending weekly classes to hone and advance their existing playwriting skills, the kids will be partnered with their creative teams, each comprised of one dramaturge/director and three actors. A central theme will once again be involved, but we'll be shaking things up a bit: the kids will, as a group, decide who/what two of the three characters will be for ALL the plays. The characteristics of these characters will vary from playwright to playwright but all plays will have, for example, a dog and a peanut butter sandwich. Each playwright will then choose his or her own distinctive third character (the "wild card"). They will also be required to, somewhere in their dialogue, include an "assigned", theme-appropriate line, chosen before the writing begins. This combination of "the shared" and "the individual" will be a challenge for the kids, requiring them to express their unique selves within slightly stricter parameters than is usual in the work we do. And, no doubt, it will prove to be tremendous fun for the audiences.
