Playmaking

Our PLAYMAKING program is the children's introduction to the Project. Over the course of seven weeks, the kids (most of them third graders) learn how to express themselves creatively through the art of playwriting. The Playmaking classes culminate in each child being partnered with the three adults that make up his or her "creative team": a director and two adult actors. Each child interviews his or her actors, using questions the kids have developed as a group.

At a special Playwriting Weekend, the playwrights work with their directors (who also act as dramaturgs) writing short plays, based on a central theme, for their actors. The plays are then rehearsed and performed for a weekend in a local Providence theater space. The shows are open to the general public and the tickets are free of charge. The playwrights take turns sitting at a special desk off to one side of the stage, allowing them to watch their words come to life (and allowing the audience to watch them).

And every playwright takes a bow!
